Dancing Raisins

Introduction

Raisins are heavy enough to sink if you put them into water.  What do you think will happen if you put them in soda?

Materials

1 Clear Glass

6-8 Raisins

Clear Soda

Procedure

  1. Fill the glass half way with soda.  Put the raisins into the soda.

  1. What happens after 5-10 minutes?

  1. What matter do you observe that is a:

Solid? _________________________________________

Liquid? ________________________________________

Gas? _________________________________________

Conclusion

How do you explain why the raisins are dancing?

Ooblech

Materials

1 Measure of cornstarch

1 Measure of water

2 large beakers

Paper clip

Metal spoon

Food coloring

Procedure

  1. Pour a measure of cornstarch into a cup.

  1. Slowly add a half measure of water, a little at a time, mixing with your fingers as you go.  Add food coloring as desired.

  1. Pick up the ooblech in your hands and squeeze it.  Now open your hand.  What happens?  Try banging it with a spoon.  Try pushing the spoon slowly into the material.  Try stirring the ooblech.  What happens?  Record your observations below.

  1. Try allowing the ooblech to drip from one container into another.  Try cutting the dripping material with a pair of scissors.  What happens? Record your observations.

  1. Do you think ooblech is a solid or a liquid?  Why?  Record your thoughts.

Observations

Action

What happens??

Squeeze the ooblech into a ball.

After shaping the slime into a ball, open your hand.

Gently bang the ooblech with a spoon.

Push the spoon into the ooblech.

Stir the ooblech.

As you pour the ooblech into another container, try and cut it with scissors.

Conclusions

Do you think the ooblech is a solid or a liquid?  Why?

Glurch

Materials

Solution 1

Glue

Water

Food Coloring

Cups

Procedures

  1. Place a measure of glue into a cup.

  1. Slowly add an equal measure of water to the glue.  Stir well.  Add food coloring if desired.

  1. To your cup of glue-water solution, add an equal volume of Solution 1.  Stir.  What happens?

  1. Describe your results.  What properties do you observe?

  1. Do you think the glurch is a solid or a liquid?  Why?  Record your thoughts.

Observations

  1. What happened after adding together Solution 1 with the water and glue solution?

  1. What properties do you observe?

  1. Do you think glurch is a solid or a liquid?  Why?
